Like many 11-year-olds, Danielle Gafni asked if her father could buy her something when the two were at a store. When he suggested she use her own money, earned by washing the family car, Danielle reminded her dad she already spent some of it on something. Problem is, both Danielle and her father couldn't recall how much she had left. This gave Danielle an idea, which would later become bankaroo.

The Web-based application now available for smartphones and tablets, bankaroo is a simple yet effective way for kids to manage their allowance and other money, while keeping track of their expenses, too.

Free to use but requiring a log-in name and password, bankaroo isn't tied to a real bank account, but it will help kids gain an early understanding of what's coming in and what's going out.

For example, if a child receives a $20 gift card for a birthday, a $10 bill from Grandma and $5 for cleaning their room, these credits would be highlighted in green on the itemized list. Purchases, however, such as a $5 magazine or $10 album on iTunes, would show up as a debit on the virtual account, highlighted in red.

Kids and their parents can review their bankaroo "statement" at any time to make adjustments and see their balance. The app also lets kids set goals, such as raising $85 to pay for half of a new Nintendo 3DS video game system.

Designed for kids ages 5 to 13, Bankaroo is a free downloadable app from the Apple App Store, but the HTML5 Web application can also work on virtually any device that has access to the Internet.
